McKINNEY, Texas — A 29-year-old man towed a trailer full of explosives into a suburban Dallas police station’s parking lot Tuesday, then set fire to his pickup truck and began shooting at the building in an apparent attempt to lure people outside to kill them, authorities said.
Patrick Gray Sharp died after a shootout with officers, but it’s unclear whether he was killed by an officer’s bullet or one of his own, McKinney police Chief Doug Kowalski said.
No one else was hurt during the Tuesday morning clash, which led a local college to lock down its campus and alert students and faculty to stay home.
Sharp may have intended to lure people from the police station so he could shoot at them from a field across the street where he had taken position, Kowalski said. He also may have intended to kill them by blowing up the trailer, he said.
The fire set off ammunition in the truck but failed to ignite the trailer, which was filled with wood chips, ammonium nitrate, gasoline and road flares, Kowalski said.
Investigators found an assault rifle, a shotgun and a handgun on Sharp. Kowalski said Sharp fired at least 100 rounds at the police station, and the chief counted at least 23 bullet strikes on the building.
Sharp was found dead after police fired an unknown number of rounds while pursuing him in a line of trees where Sharp had taken cover and into an open field near Collin College, the chief said.
It wasn’t clear how Sharp died, but Kowalski said a witness indicated he might have shot himself. The chief said investigators haven’t determined why Sharp initiated the attack in the suburb of roughly 127,000 people about 30 miles north of Dallas.
“He had a plan. He was activating his plan. He was heavily armed,” Kowalski said. “He looked like he knew what he wanted to do. What we don’t know is why he wanted to do it.”
Sharp’s roommate, Eric McClellan, told The Associated Press by phone that he was on vacation outside Texas when he received calls from state troopers and his stepfather telling him what happened. He said he was “still in shock,” and that there was nothing about Sharp that would lead him to believe he would try to attack police.
“He was fine and dandy when I left Texas two days ago, and, all of a sudden, I get a phone call,” McClellan said. “There’s nothing I can say. He was a great guy, a good friend.”
McClellan said he was questioned about Sharp by police and couldn’t provide them with much information.
He said he and Sharp kept guns in their residence because they like sports shooting.
“We’re Texans,” he said. “We have the right to bear arms.”
McClellan said he was doing contract work for building wire manufacturer Encore Wire Corp. six years ago when he met Sharp, who was an employee of the company. They had been roommates for four years, he said.
Collin County records show Sharp and McClellan are co-owners of the manufactured home they shared near Anna, a town about 15 miles north of McKinney.
Matt Payne, who witnessed some of the clash, told the AP he was on his way to work with his wife and 10-year-old son when they heard “this popping sound” while they waited at a red light near the police station. They drove in front of the station and saw the truck engulfed in flames before looking across the street and seeing a man in an open field in an olive-colored flak jacket and carrying what looked like a military-style rifle.
A campus police vehicle drove around a building and the man turned his weapon toward the officer’s car before gunfire broke out, Payne said.
“He was not hidden at all,” Payne said. “It was obvious that he intended to go and hurt people and wasn’t real concerned about whether he made it or not.”
Ed Leathers, Collin College’s police chief, said the gunman shot several times at a campus officer’s patrol car. One of the bullets penetrated the back of the vehicle and would have struck the officer if it hadn’t been stopped by a metal plate behind the back seat, part of the safety divider that separates officers from those in the back, he said.
“He came one inch from being killed possibly,” Leathers said. “The bullet went straight for his back and lodged in that plate.”
Leathers said the officer, a veteran of more than 20 years of police work, was on a routine patrol when he came across the gunman. He said there was a shotgun in the vehicle, but the officer never got a chance to use it.
Several other campus officers were then dispatched to the scene, but none discharged their weapons, he said.
Leathers said bullets from the shootout also penetrated a metal building on campus. School employees were in the building, which is mainly used for records, but none were hurt, he said.
Leathers said the incident was the first time in the 10 years his department has existed that there has been shooting on or near the campus.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger said Texas Rangers, highway patrol and DPS aircraft were on the scene or headed to the area. Vinger could provide no further details.
The Collin County Community College District sent an e-mail alert to college staff and students shortly after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday warning that shots had been fired and that the central campus in McKinney was closed.

Close friends of the alleged shooter at a McKinney police building say it was a big shock to hear of the shootout and his death.
In my opinion, this will be used as an excuse to militarize all police stations. They will need a few more.

MESA, Ariz. — Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms discovered a large cache of weapons after serving a search warrant at a Mesa home early Monday morning.
The warrant was based on a “federal firearms violation.”
ATF agents said some 1,000 firearms that were being illegally dealt out of the home in the area of 84th Street (Hawes Road) and McDowell Road have been confiscated.
One person is in custody in the case.
According to agents, the weapons being dealt out of the Mesa home were connected to various crimes within days of being sold. One of the weapons reportedly was involved in a Phoenix drive-by shooting. Investigators said that “time to crime” means the suspect allegedly was not doing any kind of background checks on his customers.
The man is accused of selling firearms, including handguns, high-powered rifles and even some assault rifles, to anybody with the money to buy.
While a license is not required for private gun collectors to sell weapons, investigators said the suspect was restocking his weapons and continuing to sell despite not being a dealer.
The alleged dealer, whose name has not been released, is accused of selling guns in New Mexico and Nevada, as well as here in Arizona.
This morning’s ATF operation is the culmination of an eight-month investigation that started when undercover officers purchased weapons from the suspect.
ATF agents and Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies expected to be on the scene for several hours.

MANCHESTER, Conn. – One of two survivors shot in a beer warehouse rampage in Connecticut tells The Associated Press the gunman was “cold as ice” as he started firing his weapon shortly after being forced to resign for stealing beer.
Steve Hollander’s family owns the beer distributorship where Omar Thornton killed eight people Tuesday before killing himself. Hollander was shot two times but survived. One other person is still hospitalized.
Hollander tells the AP that Thornton was caught on videotape stealing beer several times. He says Thornton did not contest it or get angry, and chose to quit rather than being fired.
Then, he pulled out a gun and started shooting.
Hollander says Thornton was cool and calm the whole time, and says he survived by the grace of God.

MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — A warehouse driver who a union official said was caught on video stealing beer from the distributorship where he worked went on a shooting rampage there Tuesday, killing eight people and wounding two before committing suicide.
Omar Thornton, 34, pulled a handgun after a meeting in which he had been offered the chance to quit or be fired, Manchester Police Chief Marc Montminy said. Among those killed was Thornton’s union representative at the meeting.
The gunman, who was black, had complained of racial harassment and said he found a picture of a noose and a racial epithet written on a bathroom wall, the mother of his girlfriend said. Her daughter told her that Thornton’s supervisors told him they would talk to his co-workers.
Brett Hollander, whose family owns the distributorship, said, “I can assure you there has never been any racial discrimination at our company.” And a union official said Thornton had not filed a complaint of racism with the union or any government agency.
Thornton had been caught on videotape stealing beer, Teamsters official Christopher Roos said.
“It’s got nothing to do with race,” Roos said. “This is a disgruntled employee who shot a bunch of people.”
Thornton’s girlfriend had been with him the night before the rampage and had no indication he was planning it, said her mother, Joanne Hannah.
On Tuesday morning, about 50 to 70 people were in the warehouse about 10 miles east of Hartford during a shift change when the gunman opened fire around 7 a.m., Hollander said. Adding to the chaos at the warehouse was a fire, which was put out. Montminy said he didn’t know how the fire started, but didn’t think it was set.
The shooting was over in a matter of minutes, Montminy said. The victims were found all over the complex, and authorities don’t know if Thornton fired randomly or targeted specific co-workers, Montminy said.
After shooting his co-workers, Thornton called his mother, Hannah said.
“He wanted to say goodbye and that he loved everybody,” Hannah said.
Thornton was alive when police got to the scene but killed himself before officers got to him, Montminy said. A police sharpshooter had approval to fire on Thornton when he killed himself, an official with knowledge of the scene told the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it.
Hannah said her daughter, Kristi, had dated Thornton for the past eight years. Kristi Hannah did not return calls for comment.
“Everybody’s got a breaking point,” Joanne Hannah said.
Hannah described Thornton as an easygoing guy who liked to play sports and video games. She said he had a pistol permit and had planned to teach her daughter how to use a gun.
Hollander’s cousin, Steve, who’s a vice president at the company, was shot in the arm and the face. Hollander said he thought his cousin would be OK. Steve Hollander would not comment when reached on his cell phone.
Police declined to release the names of those killed.
Among the dead was Bryan Cirigliano, 51, of Newington, president of Teamsters 1035, according to the union. He had been Thornton’s representative at Tuesday’s disciplinary hearing, the union said.
Bill Ackerman, a 51-year-old warehouseman, also was killed, said his girlfriend, Stephanie Laurin.
“I was like, ‘Where’s Billy, where’s Billy?’ and they said they hadn’t seen him. And then one of his co-workers told me … that he saw the shooter go to where Billy’s room is that he works in,” she said. “I was just praying to God that he was OK.”
Ackerman, who enjoyed playing golf and rooting for the Boston Red Sox, had worked for the company for about 20 years, she said.
The Hartford Courant identified another victim as Victor James, 59, of Windsor. Two victims were being treated at Hartford Hospital.
The rampage was the nation’s deadliest since 13 people were fatally shot at Fort Hood, Texas, in November. A military psychiatrist is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in that case.
In Connecticut, a state lottery worker gunned down four supervisors in 1998 before committing suicide, and six people were killed in 1974 in botched robbery at a bakery in New Britain. Two men were convicted of that crime.
On Tuesday, a few dozen relatives and friends of the victims gathered a few miles away at Manchester High School. Outside, people talked, hugged and cried. Others talked on cell phones.
Police officers from numerous agencies and police and fire vehicles surrounded the warehouse, on a tree-lined road in an industrial park just west of a shopping mall.
Thornton listed Hoffman’s Gun Center & Indoor Range in Newington as among his interests on his Facebook page. A company official declined to comment.
Thornton filed for bankruptcy protection a decade ago. His Chapter 7 petition in 2000 listed $4,850 in assets, including a 1994 Chrysler Concorde, and more than $15,000 in liabilities — primarily debt on credit card and student loan payments. His debts were discharged in March 2001 and the case was closed the following month.
The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities said Hartford Distributors has never had any complaints filed against it.
The Hollander family is widely respected in Manchester, said state Rep. Ryan Barry, a lifelong resident. He said the family-owned Hartford Distributors sponsors local sports teams and the family is civic-minded.
“Everybody knows the Hollanders as good, generous, upstanding people,” Barry said. “They’re embedded in the community. Everyone knows Hartford Distributors. They treat their employees very well and they’re part of the fabric of the town.”
In a statement, Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell offered condolences to the victims’ families and co-workers.
“We are all left asking the same questions: How could someone do this? Why did they do this?” she said.

BEIJING – A man wielding a knife killed three children and a teacher in a kindergarten in eastern China, residents said Wednesday as the government muted information in a bid to allay public fears and forestall more school attacks.
The delay in releasing information by officials and state media is part of a government attempt to discourage copycat killers and assuage fears over a series of school attacks this year that have caused dozens of deaths and wounded scores.
Online postings about the attack were deleted by midafternoon Wednesday by government censors who police the Internet for material considered politically sensitive.
The assailant entered the Boshan District Experimental Kindergarten’s Jinfengyuan branch in a suburb of Zibo in Shandong province at about 4 p.m. Tuesday as parents were picking up their children, according to people living nearby contacted by telephone.
About 20 children and staff members were wounded, two of the children seriously, they said.
In state media’s only mention of the attack, Xinhua News Agency issued a short report late Wednesday, citing a city government statement that said police had detained a 26-year-old man on suspicion of killing at least three children.
Self-employed Fang Jiantang admitted committing the attack with a 24-inch (60 centimeter) knife, but his motive was unknown, Xinhua said.
Assailants in previous attacks often had mental illness, grudges against their victims or anger over personal failures.
The seemingly unrelated attacks have prompted calls for more attention to diagnosing serious mental illnesses and concern over the toll economic disparity and stress are taking on the nation’s emotional health.
The government has increased school security, sought to limit publicity on attacks and told police to identify problems that might escalate to violence. It also has dealt harshly with the assailants; most of the recent school attackers have been executed, even when all their victims survived.
In Tuesday’s attack, Xinhua reported three children died at the scene, and three others and four teachers were taken to hospital. Two teachers were in serious condition, it said.
Earlier, the head of the Zibo government propaganda department’s news office, who gave just his surname, Bi, would say only that there had been “very few deaths and injuries.”
“The country has a regulation about reporting on these sorts of reports. There’s a worry that they might inspire copycat crimes creating a negative impact, so therefore, we are not issuing a report,” Bi told The Associated Press by phone.
A woman who works in a restaurant opposite the kindergarten said the attacker was a man aged 27 or 28 who posed as a parent to enter the school.
Police rushed to the kindergarten soon after the attack and officers transported some wounded children to a hospital before ambulances had time to arrive, said the woman, who would give only her surname, Zhang.
“The kindergarten has been sealed off,” Zhang said. “There are still police officers there.”
Zhang and other area residents said the teacher died of her injuries Wednesday morning.
The Zibo killings came just two days after a drunken man driving an earthmover in Hebei province, smashing vehicles and buildings and killed 17 people.
Other recent rampages include a May 12 attack on a kindergarten in the northern province of Shaanxi that killed seven children and two adults, and the wounding of 29 children at a kindergarten in Jiangsu province in April.

Also, habe ich hier weniger mit der Pflege von Patienten zu tun, wie auf vielen anderen Stationen sonst üblich. system Patienten sind meistens alle recht opportune hier. person glaubt manchmal eher, fix einem Hotel angestellt zu sein nicht predominance einem Krankenhaus. Trotzdem macht es mir hier großen Spaß. wherefore hat friend hier decide mehr Zeit, sich locker mit pothole Patienten oder tunnel Arbeitskolleginnen zu unterhalten.
